Celebrating the life of

Olin Thompson "T" Smith

October 11, 1937 - December 28, 2015

Olin Thompson

SAVANNAH - Olin Thompson Smith, also known as “T” Smith, 78, died Monday, December 28, 2015 after a decade-long neurological illness. As the son of the late Julius Angus and Carolyn Olin Thompson Smith, he was a fourth generation Savannahian.

“T” was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Davidson Smith and his son Julius Angus Smith. He is survived by his son Tye Davidson Smith, grandsons Tyler Brook Smith and Jonathan Davidson Smith, sister, Gina Smith Sunderland and brother-in-law William Irwin Sunderland, nephews Holden Thompson Hayes and Mose Sim Hayes III (Trey), nieces-in-law Caroline Quarles Hayes and Leah Broussard Hayes, cousins Dana Reinschmidt Tompkins and Robert Tompkins.

The family would like to thank Anne and Bobby Groves, Rick and Patty Glendye and all his doctors, nurses, and caregivers for all their love and caring.

“T” was in the first Savannah Country Day Graduating Class and earned his college degree from the University of Georgia where he was an avid fan and supporter going as far as naming all of his boats, Harry Dog. He began his career at Varnedoe Chisolm and later was executive vice president and co-owner of the investment advisory firm, Minis and Company, for over 32 years with his friend and business partner Russ Carpenter.

Most often anonymously, “T” was a major advocate and contributor to many of Savannah’s charities and institutions including the Jenkins Boy’s Club, Hospice Savannah, and Bethesda to name a few. In concert with the Mayo Clinic, “T” has made a lasting contribution to progressive research which will hopefully benefit generations to come.

He was a member of the Savannah Sport Fishing Club, Savannah Yacht Club, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Cotillion Club, Century Club, and the Old Goat Club.

Like his family, “T” loved the ocean and its wildlife. He caught the first Blue Marlin off the coast of Georgia and was constantly putting trout and reds in the boat. Many of his fishing holes were a secret that will be lost forever. Being out on the water was his passion and his idea of happiness. So he has now “Gone Fishing”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O. Box 13190, Savannah, Ga 31416 or your favorite local charity.

GUEST BOOK

I treasure all of the good memories of my Friend T Smith. I worked for him at VCS, fished and hunted with him and followed his great career and success over the years. He shared his success and good fortune in such a generous way. It was a mark of his character and an example for all to follow. Just a month ago I had a great visit with him there in his home. It was sad to see the toll his neurological problem had taken on his once very strong and athletic physique. But I was just as impressed with his clarity of thought and conversation. I was so glad I had this chance to visit with him and will always hold him in the highest regard.

We are so sorry to learn about T's passing. He was a great fellow and one of a kind. I was fortunate to work for and with him for several years and to have been his business partner. We miss him already. He loved his family, his friends, his clients and the ocean.
